You can find many tools to track your rankings on Google for your website. How to check is easy – just drop in your keyword phrase.

I use Google’s free Keyword Planner and the paid tools, but I like to supplement them now and then with simple ones like:

Regardless of what keyword ranking tool you use to track progress on Google, keep these tips in mind.

1. Your rankings are only as good as your keyword phrases. You can rank No. 1 all day long and never get a single website visitor. Make sure the phrases are relevant and that people actually use them.

2. Natural search engine rankings get pushed down all of the time on Google because of the Search engine results pages – SERPs (Google, for example, shows everything from featured snippets and videos to several People Also Ask options).

3. Algorithms change frequently on Google. I’ve seen rankings go from No. 7 to No. 42 and back to No. 7 over a few days.

4. Personalization is a factor. Google will show different rankings for your keywords based on where the searcher happens to be at the time.

5. Track a strategic set of keywords. If you watch rankings for too many keyword phrases for your website, you will lack focus. Pay attention to the keywords that you can actually do something about. Do you have time to refine existing pages and make new pages to secure the top ranking?
